New and used books

Your money and mom’s reading can go far with their incredible selection of new and slightly used books! It’s a wonderful shop to browse in and marvel at their well-organized categories – and thrilling to hit upon a classic you’ve always wanted to read, and find just sitting on a shelf waiting for you! (This happens to me every time I go in there!)

A Book Barn has a trade-in program for store credit, cash – or, you can just donate any books outright! A phone call and appointment is necessary however to make sure someone can meet with you to make sure titles are ones they can use, and are still in salable condition. Make appointments at 559.297.9052

Local Authors

Besides not being a chain, they are the only book store around these parts to carry local author’s works! At times, they carry anywhere from 100 to 150 local author’s titles (including my own!)

More local authors

My book on the same bookshelf as award-winning children’s picture book author Margarita Engle, and Doug Hansen of Fresno State, as well as many other local authors! 😊

Books for everyone! Chapter books, and Young Adult…

Children's books

There are several children’s areas of books – this is a reading corner where Mother Goose, formerly of Storyland days –  comes to read to children every Tuesday & Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Also, a special reading session is held the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month at 1 p.m. to allow children with any reading difficulties to sit down next to a furry, friendly service dog, to read without threat of being judged by their peers. Reading improves because while they practice, they associate reading with doing something pleasant.

More children's classics

Another great summer reading program will start from June 01st to August 6th, and encourages beginners thru teens, to participate in a sign-up sheet to keep score on how many books they read over the summer.

This summer the reading program is highlighting Fairy Tales from around the worldand at the end after reading at home all summer, children, including high schoolers can attend a Pizza Party on August 06th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at A Book Barn, where there will also be drawings for prizes! (Past prizes have included passes to the Movies, Jump House’s, Grizzlies’ Games, Santa Cruz Boardwalk passes, etc.) Readers even dress up as their favorite character when attending the party!

Books on writing

If you are a wanna-be writer, or even an up and coming author, A Book Barn takes you seriously, and has many books on the craft – and has opened up an area for people to host critique groups, conduct research, or just find a quiet place to sit and write a spell!

Writer's space

In the writer’s space, business owners Dan & Peg Dunklee have provided creature comforts for their writer friends and clients:  a meeting space with free wifi, and even coffee on an honor system!

You can tell this warm, welcoming couple really care about the literary world as they have set up their business to enrich reader’s lives and sponsor writers in whatever way they can to support their craft, even starting a publishing arm, HBE publishing – which stands for Hummingbird Enterprises.

They have published many local authors and help them through the editing process, which Dan himself undertakes; and through the entire process of producing a manuscript – finding illustrators, designers, and ultimately helping package a book any writer would be proud to call their own.
